Yeah. No, to be honest, I can't believe we've actually stayed pretty consistent on posting. I mean, we've managed to get one out every week, not quite every Sunday, but close enough.

Yeah, I think we thought oh it only takes 20 odd minutes to record a podcast, but it doesn't. You know everything else involved, preparing the content of the lessons, editing, get them posted all the bonus material we're doing along with all the lesson notes, the transcripts. And trying to stay somewhat like distant on social media as well. But that hasn't worked out too well.

Next anyway, enough rambling, let's get straight into today's lesson. Like I said last week, we're going to be practising and testing ourselves on the language we've learned over the last four lessons.

Alright! This is what I get from my students all the time, miss, another test?! But anyway. I'm going to give you 10 words or phrases to be fair, to translate from Catalan into English first. OK, you'll get one point for each one you get right… Or maybe half a point if it's not quite right. But you know almost half right. That kind of thing.

Well I know banc means bank.

See I tried to make it easy, somewhat.

A la ciutat, hi ha un banc. I'm going to guess at… There is a bank. And there was something before it, but I can't remember what ciutat is.

Hi ha un banc does mean there is a bank, yeah. Yeah, it means there is. A la ciutat, you that where might you find a bank? This is from the first lesson we did on this kind of little mini set of lessons.

So town was one of the words we did. And then the other one was.

Yeah, City, I'll give you that, I think. Yeah, you kind of got it in the end with a little bit of help, but we'll give you that. A la ciutat, hi ha un banc - in the city, there is a bank.
#2. La plaça és tot recte.

La plaça és tot recte. On what what plaça? Is? I know this is slightly wrong, but is it, the place is straight ahead.

Oh, you've got the direction, right? OK, és tot recte, but it's not the place. La plaça.
Alex
No, I'm stumped. It sounds a bit like a swimming pool, but I don't think it is.
Christina
No, we didn't do swimming pool. But it is the square. Square, the square? Yeah, like the main square. So I'll give you half a point for that one, but yeah, you've got it’s straight ahead or is straight ahead. So the square it's straight ahead.
OK, #3. Vaig a la botiga.

Vaig a la botiga. I'm drawing a blank on that one.

So vaig is a verb that comes from the verb, the verb anar. Still no clue?

Yeah, well, the web to go is anar, but it's vaig, which is the… I form.

Well, technically it sounds a bit like bou-... Another word in English? Boutique? But is that really the same thing? Not really. A botiga is a shop. Remember? OK, so vaig a la botiga is I go or I'm going to the shop, Yeah?

#4. On és el museu.

Christina
Yeah. Good on és el museu, where is the museum? Yeah, on being the word where. És, is it? Yeah. És, is it's it's very similar. Where is the museum? OK, I'll give you that one. Good. So we're on 1,2, 3 out of 4 so far, not too bad.
#5 Giri a la dreta. I've made this one quite long. It's a bit I've made this quite hard for you. So giri a la dreta, llavors giri a l’esquerra.

Hmm. Yeah, good. Turn right, take a right.

Turn right. There's a word that was in the middle that I don’t know.
Christina
Yeah, llavors, it's tricky, really. We only really mentioned this I think once.
Alex
But then it was giri a l’equerra. Well, that's the other way, isn't it? Take a left.
Christina
Yeah. Take a left. You know what? I'm going to give you that because that was quite tricky putting that word llavors in there. We did see it. We did hear it in the episode we talked about directions. It just means then, yeah? Like next or whatever, after that.

Oh OK so it's turn right, then turn left.

Yeah. Then turn left. Yeah. Good. So turn right, giri a la dreta. Llavors, giri a l’esquerra. Than turn left.
Good number six. La propera parada.

So parada would probably be some sort of parade? I hope.

Oh no. OK, if I said la parada d’autobús. La Parada de bus. What do you think it might be, when we talked about public transport.

La propera parada is the next stop. The next stop? Yeah, like you can have una parada d’autobus is a bus stop. That's kind of what I was trying to help you with that. OK. You can't get the point for that. Sorry. OK.

So this is telling the time. So it means, two quarters to six. So is that half five?

Exactly. Well done. Yeah, 5:30. Dos-quarts de sis. Like Alex said there, that might be good to remember it. It's two quarters to six. OK. Another point. You’re brining it back now, you’re on a roll, come on.
#9 is… A quina hora surt al tren?
Alex
A quina hora surt al tren? I remember really struggling to say surt. But it must because I struggled that much saying so, I can't remember what it means.
Christina
Yeah, I realised kind of listening back a little bit. Sometimes I would say ‘surt’, sometimes ‘sur’. It just depends. Like if you're saying it fast, you don't really pronounce the T. But yeah, a quina surt al tren or a quina hora ‘sur’ al tren? It doesn't really matter what you say.
Alex
Is it at what time is the train? Leaving?
Christina
Leaving, yeah. Good. That verb, surt. Sortir is to leave. So what time does the train leave or what time? Yeah, at what time is the train leaving? Good. Yeah. Another point there.
And #10. Té el pasaport i la tarjeta d’embarcament?
Alex
Pasaport? I la tarjeta d’embarcament? Tarjeta… so this was when we were talking about flights.

Yeah, our latest episode 19.

So you think you know the first bit? Té el pasaport?

Be passport?

Passport is pasaport yeah, but té el pasaport? Or tens el pasaport? There’s two versions of the verb, but you'll likely hear because it's a stranger asking you probably té.

Christina
Yeah. Mhm.

It's like your boarding pass?
Christina
Boarding pass, la tarjeta d’embarcament was boarding pass. Good. See I feel like you remember the more the more recent ones because you know, you've done it more recently.

Yeah, you need to go back into some of the older ones that you've forgotten some of the words, OK. Ohh, I actually said this next one earlier on, but I'm going to see if you remember it, because now we're going to do 10 from English to Catalan.
So #11 is the bus stop.

Which I said earlier and you thought it was something completely different.

So it’s d’autobus.
Christina
Yeah, something d’autobus like of buses, of bus.
Alex

Christina
Well, that's what you just said. D’autobus. But you need to say the stop. Like the stop of bus. What was that word for? Stop. Like next stop.

Propera is next.

Oh. So parada.
Christina
Parada. Yeah, parada. Yeah. So put it all together. You have to say the stop of bus.

So I would or I wouldn't say propera?
Christina
No, not propera cause propera means next, doesn't it? You just want the stop, the bus stop.

Christina

OK, #12. In the town, there is a police station. Oh, we're going back to some of the older ones here. Episode 16, I believe. What's in the town? The different places in town.

I can't remember town because I thought ciutat was town.

Hmm, so ciutat was city and we learned the other word for town.

So it's still a la… a la.
Christina
Hmm, it's actually masculine, the word town. So it's actually al… AL, al.
Alex
I don’t know twon. And then there is a police station. So it’d be… hi ha un… I can't remember what police station is either.
Christina
Uh oh… I'm not sure if I can give you this one if you don’t know the main words.

Yeah. No, I can't have this one. I don't know. I can't remember town or police station.
Christina
No, wasn't remembering there is. Yeah, that's important structure. Yeah. Police station is una comissaria.

Ah so it's also feminine.
Christina
Yeah. Una, it's feminine, but the word town, like I said, is masculine. It's el poble.

Christina
Any, any like ringing any bells? The pop, poble?.
Alex
Yeah, a little bit.
Christina
Poble, town. OK, sometimes it's good to like make sort of linking images to trying to remember words like. I don't know, think of a pop or like a bottle of pop in town or something like something like that, you’re walking around town with a bottle of pop and then that might help you to remember that word, you know what I mean? Something like that, make your little image in your head that links the words and the meaning.
OK, #13, do you have luggage? Or baggage? Do you have baggage? Tell me.

I have a lot of baggage.
Do you have luggage? I'm struggling on all of these. I can't remember what luggage is either.

OK. Well, to be fair, this one's only two words if you can at least tell me what to do, you have, you'll get half a mark.

We said that earlier, didn't we? Isn't that té?
Christina
Té, yeah, té. And it's a bit tricky this word. It's kind of like equipment, it looks more like that word. Again, you know you can make these links in your head to try and remember the word, some sort of equipment as your luggage.
Alex

The word OK, the word is equipatge.
Alex
Equipatge sounds like equipment?
Christina
Not really. It looks…

It sounds nothing like-

It doesn’t sound like it no, it LOOKS more like the word equipment, at the start of it, cause it's that whole EQUI etcetera. But yeah, it's equipatge but we say ‘akipatge’ OK, equpiatge. OK, make your own associations or whatever to try and learn that word.

Sounds more like alpaca.
Christina
Alpaca? OK, so you might want to think about an alpaca and a suitcase or something to try and remember that word.
OK, #14. There is a delay.

It's a bit weird. Yeah, yeah. And it's spelt, well and I'm not going to spell it out, actually.
#15, Which is the boarding gate?
Alex

Well, it's like what is the boarding gate? Yeah, but we need that question word which like, which is the boarding gate? Or literally it would be the boarding door.

No, I can't remember.

So we saw boarding pass earlier. OK, so that word is the same for boarding.

Would that be d’embarcament?
Christina
Yeah, so it's something d’embarcament. It's, again, the word will change. So we have to say the gate of boarding. OK. Or the door of boarding. Any idea, anything else or?

Like at which time or at what time… This is the whole weird thing about care and keener. OK, they can kind of both mean what? But quina is a bit more like which, when you've got, you know, a set number of gates, we have to say quina OK or set number of times like hours, a quina hora. OK, #16. What time is your flight?

So it’d be a quina hora surt? Would thar be right, surt? No, so that's leaving, right?

Leaves. Yeah, I guess you could say what time does your flight leave? So that would make sense still. But we just want the word is. What time is?

Yeah, it's difficult. You know, that's why we've got to keep going over things. Look at the lesson notes as well. And you know, test yourself with the lesson notes or the transcript or whatever it is, you know, try and write things down and say them to yourself. But yeah, you'll have time to do that now, Alex. OK #18, now we're repeating the structural lot… There is a traffic light/or traffic lights, on the third street on the right. Quite a long one there.

So there is a traffic light - I wanted to try and squeeze as much vocab in here as possible, see if you remember these things in in the town and directions and then things like third street, do you remember that?

No… So there's bits of this I do know. Obviously, we just did there is.

Yeah, dreta, good.

There's a traffic light on the third street. No, I can't. If you put me under pressure I'm even less likely to remember it so.

Yeah, it's hard as well thinking on the spot like that. So, there is you got and you got the word right. Hi ha un semàfor. Ring a bell? Semàfor?

Yeah, un semàfor is a traffic light or traffic lights, we would probably say the plural… on the third street is, al tercer carrer.

Yeah. So we had al primer carrer, al segon carrer, al tercer carrer. Yeah, those are the ones we learned useful to know in other contexts as well. And then on the right, a la dreta. OK, I don't think I can really give you any, even half for that. You've got a couple of words, but no.
19, nearly there. Where is the metro station?

Well, metro. It's still metro, right? Yeah. So where is? So that'll be on. On és. Will this be on és un metro?

Yeah. On és el metro. OK, or, you know, for the metro station, where is, so on és l’estació de metro? Yeah. L’estació being station we had l’estació d’autobús, l’estació de tren, l’estació de metro but people do just tend to say el metro, okay on és el metro.

El vol. Yeah. So we learned this in the main episode, kind of looking back at it. I think it's a little bit odd to say what time does the flight because I guess we board the flight, don't we? So it would probably be more likely to say a quina hora embarquem, cause that’s we, okay, which in the bonus episodes, we’ve done a bit of the present tense. OK, so that we know that it ends in EM because it's we board the flight or embarco would be I board the flight, that kind of thing. OK, but yeah, you'd be understood anyway, saying what time does it board or what time do we board? So yeah, I think I will give you that one. Well done. There we go. You'll be relieved that we've finished everything. And I think I lost track. I stopped. I didn't count some of them so. I'm not exactly sure how well you did, Alex. I feel like you didn't do too badly, some…

We might have to retake at some point because clearly there are there is still some work to be done, some words that you'd forgotten and things like that. But you know, you’re getting some of the grammar and you’re getting a few words still. It is quite a lot, you know, it's actually whole phrases now, rather than just words, but I wanted to push you as much as I could.
